Multi-billion-dollar firm admits its software was responsible

By WEB Reporter

On Friday 19 July 2024 computer systems around the world experienced an outage that has led to ongoing disruptions across multiple industries. The outage was caused by an update to Crowdstrike's Falcon antivirus software, the company has admitted.

Crowdstrike, which was founded in 2011, is a cloud-based cybersecurity platform whose software is used by scores of industries around the world. The company's software is designed to protect against malware, ransomware, and other cyber threats.

In a blog post, Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz said the issue was identified and isolated and that engineers deployed an update to fix the problem. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused," Kurtz said.

Microsoft has since released a statement blaming Crowdstrike for the outage. "We have been working with Crowdstrike to resolve the issue and have determined that the outage was caused by an update to Crowdstrike's Falcon antivirus software," Microsoft said.

Microsoft has advised users to locate and delete the file matching C:\Windows\System32\drivers\wbengine.sys to resolve the issue.

The outage has caused significant disruption to businesses around the world. Many companies have been unable to access their email, files, or other essential services.

The outage is a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity. Businesses need to ensure that they have adequate security measures in place to protect their data and systems from cyber threats.
