Spain and Italy open Euro 2024 with contrasting wins

Spain cruise past Croatia, while Italy edge out Turkey

Spain began their Euro 2024 campaign with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Croatia in Copenhagen on Sunday.

The reigning European champions were in control from the start and took the lead through a Sergio Busquets header midway through the first half. Ferran Torres doubled Spain's advantage just after the hour mark, and Pablo Sarabia added a third in the closing stages.

Italy, meanwhile, had to work much harder for their opening win, eventually edging out Turkey 1-0 in Rome.

The only goal of the game came from Nicolo Zaniolo in the 53rd minute, and Italy had to withstand some late pressure from Turkey to secure the three points.

The results leave Spain and Italy in a strong position in Group B, with both teams now on three points. Croatia and Turkey will face each other in the other Group B match on Wednesday.

Spain will be hoping to continue their good form when they take on Italy in their second group game on Friday. A win for Spain would all but seal their place in the last 16.
